When Might you replace your boiler?

Many homeowners wait until their boiler completely fails before thinking about a replacement — but in most cases, the signs appear long before that happens. Replacing your boiler before it fails completely can save money, reduce disruption, and keep your home running efficiently — especially during the colder months. Here are some of the most common reasons why a boiler replacement might be the right choice:

Obsolete Parts

Older boilers can be difficult or impossible to repair when spare parts are no longer made.

Beyond economical repair

If fixing your existing boiler costs more than a new one, it’s usually more sensible to replace it.

Frequent Breakdowns

Regular callouts for breakdowns and faults get costly and often signal that your boiler is nearing the end of its natural lifespan.

High running costs

Older, non-condensing boilers can waste energy and increase your bills. Newer boilers are far more efficient and eco-friendly.

Need More Space

Replacing an older, wall-hung or floor-standing boiler can free up valuable space in your kitchen or utility room.

Excessive noise

Worn components can make your system noisy. A modern boiler will run quietly and smoothly.

It's become unsuitable

Growing families can outgrow their boiler’s hot water capacity. Modern system provide higher volume and more reliable hot water.

renovation or extension

If you’re upgrading your home, your old boiler might not be powerful or efficient enough to cope with extra radiators or bathrooms.

Boiler Types

For domestic home heating systems there are typically three types of boiler that we install; Combination (Combi) boilers, System boilers and Regular boilers.

The boilers do vary and each are suited for different homes and living situations. Combi boilers are small and compact and provide instant hot water. System boilers require a hot water cylinder for storing hot water. Regular boilers require a cold water tank as well and are usually found in homes with a traditional heating system.

Combi Boiler

A combination or ‘combi’ boiler is both a high efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler in a single compact unit. Combi boilers heat water directly from the mains

when you turn on a tap, so you won’t need a hot water storage cylinder or a cold water storage tank in the roof space.

They are also very cost-effective and energy-efficient as water is heated instantly rather than being heated and then stored in a cylinder. An added benefit is that hot water is delivered at mains pressure, which means that you could get a powerful shower without the need for a separate pump.

System Boiler

System boilers require a cylinder for storing hot water, however the major heating and hot water system components are built into the boiler itself.

In addition, there is no need for a tank in the loft, so it can be an option in a home with little or no loft space or where the space is earmarked for a conversion.

These boilers are also compatible with solar water heating systems, which deliver environmental benefits as well as lower energy bills.

Regular Boiler

Regular boilers (sometimes known as traditional, conventional or heat only boilers) are ideally suited to homes that already have a traditional heating and hot water system

linked to a separate hot water cylinder. These boilers also need a cold water storage tank in the loft to feed the hot water cylinder as well as a tank that maintains the water level of the central heating system.

A regular boiler may be the best option for replacing an existing boiler if the property has an older radiator system, as it might not be able to cope with the higher water pressure that is delivered by system or combi boilers.

We Understand Replacing Your Boiler Is a Big Decision

We know choosing to replace or install a new boiler isn’t something homeowners do every day — it’s a major investment in your home’s comfort, safety, and efficiency. It’s completely natural to have questions or concerns before making that commitment. At Active Heating Services, we make it our priority to guide you through every step, ensuring you feel confident, informed, and fully in control.

Here are some of the most common worries people have when arranging a boiler installation — and how we make them stress-free:

Choosing the right boiler

There's so many boiler types and brands, it can feel overwhelming and people fear choosing the wrong one.

How we help

We take the time to understand your home and family needs before recommending a boiler. We work with all major brands, so our advice is genuine and unbiased — we’ll always recommend what’s best for you.

Costs and hidden extras

A new boiler is a big purchase, and no one likes surprises when it comes to money and costs spiralling.

How we help

We provide clear, upfront quotes with no hidden fees or unexpected add-ons. You’ll know exactly what’s included before any work begins, and we’ll always offer options that suit and reassure your budget. We also offer boiler finance.

Disruption During Install

People worry about being left without heating or hot water, or their home being a mess during works.

How we help

Most installations are completed within 1–2 days, and we plan the work around your schedule. We use dust sheets, keep our work tidy, and ensure your heating and hot water are back on as quickly as possible.

Choosing an installer

Letting someone into your home and work on your heating system can be daunting to know who you can trust.

How we help

Our engineers are Gas Safe and OFTEC registered, highly experienced, and enhanced DBS checked. We've been established for over 25 years locally and care for you and your home with the highest respect.

Aftercare and Support

People often worry about what happens afterwards, what if they need help or something goes wrong?

How we help

We care for you before during and after your install. We are friendly, and just a phone call away with no call centre to battle with. We handle all manufacturer warranty registrations and provide ongoing servicing and support, from our trusted local team.

Which company to use, National or Local Boiler Installer?

When choosing who to install your new boiler, many people wonder whether to go with a large national installer or a local independent company. There are key differences that matter when it comes to service, flexibility and value.

Active Heating Services combine professional expertise with local personal service, we genuinely care about our reputation and our customers because this is our community too. We are based in the heart of Berkshire, you’ll deal with our friendly local office and the same familiar engineers not frustrating call centres.  With us you deal with a person who knows your home and system. So with Active Heating Services, you get the reliability and technical ability of a large installer, but with care and responsiveness of a local business. We’re large enough to handle popular and busy, yet small enough to give every customer the personal attention they deserve.

Large, well-known companies like British Gas or BOXT often have a big brand presence and online convenience, but that can come with trade-offs. You often pay more to cover national overheads such as marketing and vans, appointments can be less flexible, work is often subcontracted to different engineers or companies across the country and aftercare is far less personal, with the call centre being your only point of contact.

Boiler Installation FAQs

Hopefully these may answer your questions, if you have further questions please do get in touch with our team

That depends on your hot water demand, number of radiators, and how your property is laid out. Combi boilers are great for smaller homes with no need for a separate hot water tank. System or regular boilers are better if you have multiple bathrooms or stored hot water needs. We’ll assess your property during the home survey and recommend the boiler type that’s most efficient and cost-effective for you.

The cost depends on several factors: boiler make & model, fuel type (gas, LPG, oil), any necessary pipework or flue modifications, and whether you’re replacing in the same location or relocating. Following a free home survey we always provide transparent, itemised quote so you know all the costs up front — no nasty surprises.

Sometimes yes. Your existing pipework, radiators, flue, condensate setup, or even your hot water cylinder may need work for the best performance or to meet safety/Building Regulations. Our home survey identifies any required upgrades or improvements.

A straightforward like-for-like boiler swap often takes around 1 day. If it includes relocation of the boiler, changes to fuel type, or system conversions, it might take 1-2 days or more. We’ll give a clear estimate in your quote.

We aim to minimise disruption. For many installations, the heating/hot water is off only during key moments. We use efficient processes and plan the work to reduce downtime. Where needed, we schedule that work at times that suit you.

New boilers come with manufacturer warranties — often from 5 up to 12 years depending on brand/model. We also include guarantees on installation work. To keep warranties valid, regular servicing by a qualified engineer is usually required, and we will handle registering your warranty with the manufacturer.

Yes. All installations are carried out by Gas Safe or OFTEC registered engineers. We comply with Building Regulations, install correct flues, condensate drainage, and ensure safety devices are in place. After install, we provide all relevant documentation, safety checks, and certifications.

Modern boilers are much more efficient (condensing boilers, higher ErP ratings). Choosing the right size boiler, good controls (thermostats, TRVs), and proper installation can significantly reduce your bills. During the survey we’ll show you the efficiency rating of the boiler we recommend and an estimate of fuel savings over time.

Yes. We frequently move boilers to more optimal or convenient locations (e.g. kitchen, loft, utility room). Relocation often involves extra steps: extending pipework, updating flue length, adjusting condensate drainage. We cover these in the survey and quote.

To help the job go smoothly, clear the area around your current boiler, ensure access to the boiler position, and make sure there’s power access. Our engineers will bring all necessary parts and protective equipment, and we’ll arrive within the scheduled time window.

Usually, yes — but only if it’s done by a certified installer and complies with regulations. Installing a boiler with a Gas Safe / OFTEC registered engineer, and having the correct certification and registration, helps maintain the validity of your home insurance and any building warranties.

After installation we will commission the system (ensure everything meets safety and performance standards), register your warranty, issue paperwork, and explain how to use the controls, maintenance schedules, and when you should book boiler servicing. We also remain available for any aftercare support.
